What is a CT PT transformer?
CT and PT are instrument transformers. A current transformer (CT) steps high current down to a standard low value such as 1 A or 5 A, and a potential (voltage) transformer (PT) steps high voltage down to a standard low value such as 110 V, so meters and protection relays can measure them safely.
What is the difference between a CT and a PT?
A CT measures current and is connected in series with the line, with its secondary reflecting the primary current; it should never be open-circuited while energised. A PT measures voltage and is connected in parallel across the line and must not be short-circuited. Both scale high values down to safe, standardised outputs.
What are CT and PT transformers used for?
